To celebrate International Baby-wearing week, I have teamed up with Naomi from Peach & Pea Sling Library, to talk all things baby-wearing! Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about baby-wearing, and about how you can join in using Naomi's sling library!
Firstly, can you tell us a bit about yourself and Peach & Pea Sling Library?
I am Naomi, and live in Brough with my Partner, 2 children and 2 step-children. I work full time as a Children's Occupational Therapy Apprentice and am attending university also, to become fully qualified. Life is a bit chaotic but wouldn’t have it any other way. I tend to do my sling visits in an evening, once or twice a week and some weekends as well.
What types of slings and carriers do you offer, and how do they differ?
We have a bit of everything from stretchy wraps for premature babies and newborns, to preschool carriers for those tired little legs. We have ones that you tie yourself and full buckles. All of them are ergonomic so they carry your baby in a way that is optimal for theirs and your comfort.
How do I know which type of carrier is right for me and my baby?
Some of it is trial and error but we look at what you want to get out of a carrier and how long you would like it to last. I bring various carriers with me to see what works best for you. If I don’t have one that you like I will try and source one for you.
What are the most common mistakes parents make when baby-wearing, and how can they be avoided?
Choosing a carrier that is not right for you and baby, often not fitting ergonomically so parents feel all baby's weight and often baby is not happy either. This doesn’t mean baby is too heavy and hates being worn though; having the correct sling and wearing it correctly can make all the difference.
Can you explain the T.I.C.K.S. safety guidelines for baby-wearing?
Tight - this is first as if the sling is not tight all the other areas can be affected.
In view at all times - you want to be able to see baby at all times including being able to see their airways.
Close enough to kiss - this means you dropping your head down and kissing the top of their head with ease, this means they are in a good position to be in view and means they are likely to be well supported.
Keep chin off chest - we want their airways to be free, we do not want their airways to be compromised by their chin dropping to their chest.
Supported back - if their back is supported there is less chance of their airways being compromised and then won’t be slipping down in the sling.
How can baby-wearing benefit my baby’s development and my parenting journey?
Baby-wearing is just amazing! it assists with bonding and re-connecting with your baby, you pick up on their cues quicker meaning a happier baby and happier parent. It can support parents mental health in the early days and as they get older. There are so many benefits too many to list here!
What advice do you have for parents with specific needs, like twins or babies with special conditions?
Baby-wearing can work for so many people. We have twin carriers, so both babies get the benefits of being worn. We can find different ways of wearing to suit you as long as it is safe and comfortable we can give it a go. We explore babies needs and have overcome many obstacles together to ensure baby wearing works for you and your family.
What tips do you have for baby-wearing in different seasons or climates?
Layers are always best. We do not advise padded or snow suits. Adult socks work really well to cover their extremities without adding bulk.
And lastly, what is your favourite thing about baby-wearing?
The closeness it brings. And how it can boost your mental health knowing you can go about your day with your baby knowing they are close and getting all that interaction from you that they just wouldn’t get if they were not being worn.
