This week marks Children’s Mental Health Week, a time to shine a spotlight on the importance of supporting the emotional well-being of our little ones. As parents, we know how much of a vital role we play in shaping our children's mental health, however it can be hard to know where to even start. But did you know that this journey begins long before our little ones can express their feelings with words, before they can even speak any words? In fact, the first 1001 days of life – from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday – are the most critical in laying the foundation for lifelong emotional well-being.
In this blog I'm going to share with you more about infant mental health and also share some key ways that you can support your little one's mental wellbeing, ensuring that you are giving them a strong foundation for life. And a little spoiler alert, you'll be pleased to know that it is a lot easier than you'd think!

The Importance of Infant Mental Health
Mental health isn’t just something that develops as children grow older; it begins in infancy. Infant mental health refers to the way babies experience, express, and regulate emotions, as well as how they form close relationships with their caregivers. A strong, secure attachment in these early years helps children build resilience, develop trust, and form healthy relationships throughout their lives. Research shows that babies who experience responsive, loving interactions are more likely to grow into confident, emotionally healthy individuals.
Why the First 1001 Days Matter
The first 1001 days are a crucial window for brain development. During this time, millions of neural connections are forming every second, influenced by a baby’s environment and interactions. Positive, nurturing experiences help shape a baby’s ability to handle stress, regulate emotions, and feel secure in the world. On the other hand, if a baby experiences high levels of stress or inconsistent caregiving, it can impact their developing brain and emotional well-being.
How Baby Massage Supports Infant Mental Health
One of the simplest yet most powerful ways to support infant mental health is through positive touch and bonding – and that’s where baby massage comes in. Here’s how baby massage plays a key role in nurturing your little one’s emotional well-being:
Strengthens Parent-Baby Bond – Skin-to-skin contact and gentle touch release oxytocin, the “love hormone,” deepening the connection between you and your baby. This sense of security helps shape their ability to form relationships later in life.
Reduces Stress and Promotes Relaxation – Massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping babies feel calm, safe, and regulated. This can help with reducing colic, improving sleep, and supporting emotional stability.
Encourages Emotional Regulation – Babies who receive regular, gentle, responsive touch learn how to manage their emotions more effectively, as massage helps to soothe and regulate their nervous system.
Enhances Secure Attachment – The ancient practice of baby massage promotes and supports connected and responsive parenting, it extends beyond the practice itself. When babies feel loved, responded to, and cared for, they develop a secure attachment with their caregiver. This strong foundation helps them feel safe and confident as they grow.
Prioritising Mental Well-being from the Start

As we recognise Children’s Mental Health Week, let’s remember that mental well-being begins at birth. Small, everyday moments of connection – cuddles, soothing words, eye contact, and gentle touch – all contribute to shaping a happy, emotionally secure child. Baby massage is just one beautiful way to support your baby’s emotional health from the very beginning.
