As a professional baby massage instructor and a mum, I know firsthand how precious a good night's sleep can be - for both you and your baby. Sleep is vital for your baby’s growth and development, but getting those long, peaceful stretches of rest can sometimes feel like an uphill battle.

That’s where baby massage comes in! This beautiful practice isn’t just about bonding, though that’s a big part of it. Research (and my personal experience) show it can also play a key role in improving your little one’s sleep. Let me explain how.

The Science of Sleep and Baby Massage

Studies have shown that baby massage helps to lower cortisol levels—the stress hormone—in both babies and parents. When cortisol levels drop, your baby’s body is better able to produce melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. As baby massage also reduces cortisol levels in parents too, this also means that once your little one drops off to sleep themselves, you will also be able to relax and sleep better too.

One study published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies found that infants who received regular massage showed improved sleep patterns compared to those who didn’t. The babies slept longer and more deeply—music to any parent’s ears!

How Baby Massage Supports Better Sleep

Baby massage helps to ease discomfort and relax your baby

1. Relaxing the Nervous System

Gentle massage stimulates your baby’s parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest and relaxation. This activation helps your baby shift from a state of alertness to calmness, making it easier for them to drift off.

2. Relieving Discomfort

As a mum, I know how much those little tummy troubles—like wind or colic—can disrupt sleep. Massage techniques focusing on the tummy can relieve these issues, helping your baby feel more comfortable and ready for rest.

3. Promoting Routine

Babies thrive on routine. Adding massage to your evening wind-down helps signal to your baby that it’s time to transition from play to sleep. Over time, they’ll associate this calming ritual with bedtime, which can make settling down much smoother.

If your little one is too young to have a consistent night time routine yet, please don't worry about this one too much. Just fit it in when you can and a more consistent routine will come naturally as your little one grows.

4. Strengthening the Parent-Baby Bond

The close, nurturing interaction during massage helps your baby feel safe and secure. This sense of safety is essential for relaxation and, ultimately, better sleep.

My Experience as a Mum and Instructor

When I started massaging my first baby, I noticed an immediate difference—not just in their sleep but in how calm and connected we both felt. It became our special time together, and I saw firsthand how the simple power of touch could make such a big impact. I still use massage at bedtime for my two (not so) little ones now, not only is it lovely and relaxing for us both but it's also such a wonderful bonding time.

Now, I see this same transformation in the families who attend my classes. Many parents tell me how massage has become a cherished part of their bedtime routine, helping their babies fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

Tips for Using Massage to Support Sleep

  1. Time It Right: The best time for a massage is when your baby is calm and alert—not overly tired or hungry.

  2. Set the Mood: Create a peaceful atmosphere with dim lighting and soothing music to enhance relaxation. Not forgetting some cosy cushions and blankets.

  3. Focus on Comfort: Use gentle, rhythmic strokes and a baby-safe oil to make the experience soothing and enjoyable.

  4. Be Consistent: Incorporate massage into your evening routine to help your baby associate it with sleep. (please remeber my previous comment about younger babiues and routine).
