Baby massage is a practice that has been passed down through generations, deeply rooted in cultural traditions across the world. While many parents today are just discovering the benefits of baby massage, it is important to recognise and appreciate its origins, which stem from centuries-old wisdom. This gentle yet powerful practice is not just a modern wellness trend—it is an ancient art that has been nurturing babies and strengthening parent-child bonds for thousands of years. I wanted to create this blog to highlight the ancient roots and showcase just how wonderful and powerful this practice really is!
Ancient Roots of Baby Massage
India: The Ayurvedic Tradition
One of the oldest and most well-documented traditions of baby massage comes from India. For over 3,000 years, Ayurvedic teachings have included infant massage as an essential part of newborn care. Indian families traditionally massage their babies daily using warm oils, believing it helps with digestion, circulation, and overall development. Even today, grandmothers in Indian households often pass down massage techniques to new mothers, ensuring that this invaluable practice continues across generations. The renowned Ayurvedic texts, such as the Charaka Samhita, describe the benefits of oil massage in maintaining health and well-being from infancy.
China: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
In China, baby massage is closely linked to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which

emphasises the balance of energy (Qi) within the body. Infant massage techniques, including Tui Na, have been practiced for centuries to promote circulation, support digestion, and strengthen the immune system. These techniques focus on specific acupressure points, which are believed to help with colic, teething discomfort, and sleep regulation.
Africa: A Communal Practice of Care
Across many African cultures, baby massage is an integral part of daily infant care. It is often performed by mothers, grandmothers, and even older siblings, reinforcing a strong sense of community and connection. In some regions, rhythmic massage techniques are combined with gentle stretching exercises to encourage mobility and flexibility. This practice is believed to support the baby's physical and emotional development, fostering a deep bond between caregivers and their infants.
The Western World: A Renewed Appreciation
While baby massage has been practiced globally for centuries, it gained widespread recognition in Western countries more recently. In the 1970s, French obstetrician Dr. Frédérick Leboyer helped introduce Indian baby massage techniques to the West through his book Loving Hands: The Traditional Art of Baby Massage. Around the same time, researcher Vimala McClure brought baby massage practices to the U.S. after studying in India, eventually founding the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM). These efforts played a crucial role in making baby massage more accessible to families worldwide.
